2011 YZF 450 Yamaha Dirt Bikes:

2011 YZF450

It's officially another year (well, according to the manufacturers, anyways) and Yamaha USA has introduced another competitive motocross machine: The 2011 Yamaha YZF 450. Although very similar to last year's revolutionary 2010 Yamaha YZF450, this bike has undergone a couple of revisions. The first is the YZ450F's fuel tank, which has an increased capacity of 200ccs from 6.0 to 6.2 liters. The clutch arm ratio has also been changed to decrease lever free play during long motos. The arm length has been increased by 6mm, moving it from 35mm to 41mm, and the cam shape has an increase of 0.6mm, taking it from 3.9mm to 4.5mm. Aside from performance changes, the new YZ-F has been given white lower side shrouds similar to the YZ250F.

The fact that the 2011 YZF Yamaha dirt bikes didn't see many changes tells us that Yamaha has plenty of confidence in their 450 MXer. For starters, the power on this bike is excellent. It has plenty of torque and pulls really hard into the mid range. There is definitely no need for more bottom end because this thing pulls like a tractor. If you find a tacky section on the track, you'd better hold on and make sure you don't slide right off the back of the seat. The range of power that this motor delivers is very usable on all parts of the track, and depending on whether you like to lug the motor or ride it in the revs, this bike will suit your style.

The suspension on the 2011 Yamaha YZF 450 has an extremely comfortable feeling on small bumps and when you get into the harder hits, so the bike doesn't bottom out a lot. At the peaks and valleys of each roller, the shock keeps the rear wheel on the ground at all times allowing you to stay on the gas and shoot down the track. Another great feeling that the suspension offers is how nice the bike feels when you land from a jump. The suspension isn't too firm so that it makes for a harsh landing, and it isn't too soft so that it's plush and springy feeling, but when the bike comes down to earth you aren't worrying that it might be a rough one. It takes the hit smoothly without jerking around and you don't feel any strain in your body.

Yamaha Dirt Bike engineers designed the bike's chassis to flow through tight corners with ease. When entering a corner on the YZ-F, it is super easy to control the bike and this gives moto racers confidence and pushes you to charge into the turn much harder than usual. Once you enter the corner you can lean the bike as far as you want and it follows the rut or berm without much effort. Then, getting on the gas upon exiting is when you feel the torque build up and send you quickly on your way. This bike as a whole inspires the rider to push harder and it is easy to do so because of the lightweight, nimble feel it provides on the track.

Can new graphics and white side shrouds that make the wheels go round, competitively, for another year? Since the engineers for Yamaha dirt bikes didn’t make any significant changes to the 2011 YZ 250F, it tells us they have complete confidence in their machine going up against all the other competitors that have made some revisions on their 250Fs to stay at the top of the food chain.

The YZ 250F has always had a good motor. But some have had issues with it’s ability to pull from 3rd to 4th gear exceptionally well with the stock gearing, an unusual characteristic on a stock 250F. Although nothing was changed with the motor from last year, the 2011 Yamaha YZ 250F dirt bike seems to have better throttle response and bottom end torque causing the bike to act like a bigger bike on the exit of loamy corners.

The handling of the 2011 Yamaha YZ 250F is very impressive. It does exactly what you tell it to upon entering a corner, whether you are straight up and down under heavy breaking going through breaking bumps, or beginning to lean over and committing to your line through the corner, the bike tracks like it’s on rails. The back end doesn’t give under pressure and kick to the side, it holds its place giving you confidence and bettering your cornering ability. This overall feel throughout the turns helps you to stay consistent in the corners and keep up momentum which is a crucial factor on a 250F. And it is stable too.

Looking for improvement on Yamaha’s 2011 YZ 250F is hard to single out or explain. You could start by saying it needs Fuel Injection, which it does, and eventually will have, but at the same time it is extremely competitive without it. Sure the EFI system will get rid of the slight bog in the motor on the hard landings and G-outs for fast pros, but the rest of the bike more than makes up for its slight set back of fuel delivery technology.

The 2011 YZ 250F is race ready for just about all skill levels and really doesn’t require a lot of tuning. The stock settings are super comfortable and many moto racers will feel at ease putting together fast lap times. And if there is one area motocross riders have become fond of with the YZ250F is its durability.

Yamaha 2010 YZF 450 :

2010 YZ450F

No one expected Yamaha 2010 redesigned moto dirt bikes in both the 450 and 250F Classes!

New for 2010 are completely redesigned YZF 450 Yamaha dirt bikes featuring a new Fuel-Injected Motor, and completely new Bilateral Frame design.

The new liquid-cooled DOHC 4-stroke, 4-valve engine is designed to provide improved power delivery while providing better centralization of mass. Bore and stroke is 97.0 x 60.8mm, which is 2mm larger in bore and 2.6mm shorter in stroke compared to the 2009 Yamaha dirt bikes model. The shortened stroke reduces the height of the engine for better mass centralization. The compression ratio was also increased to 12.5:1 from 12.3:1. The engineers responsible for Yamaha dirt bikes took the rearward-slanting engine concept to a whole new level by offsetting the cylinder 12mm from the crankshaft. The result is a massive reduction in friction due to the more efficient design approach of having the connecting rod vertically positioned at the precise moment of greatest combustion pressure.

The 2010 YZF 450 Yamaha Dirt Bikes incorporate a new Fuel-Injection system which continuously monitors changes in running conditions. This is accomplished by gathering information from intake pressure, intake air temperature, air pressure, crankshaft RPM, throttle position, and coolant temperature sensors. Based on this data the on-board electronic control unit (ECU) calculates the precise amount of fuel volume to be delivered. The fuel is feed through a 44mm Keihin throttle body from the front of the engine through a motocross specific 12-hole injector. With the inclusion of Fuel-Injection, the Yamaha dirt bikes incorporate a large capacity Alternating Current Magneto to eliminate the need for a battery (thus reducing overall weight). Unlike other Fuel-Injection systems Yamaha’s FI is completely tuneable by moto racers using an optional Yamaha GYTR Power Tuner accessory.

Accompanying the new engine design is an all new rear-positioned exhaust. It’s been named the ‘Tornado’ because of its curved shape. This new exhaust design maintains a similar length to the 2009 YZF450 Yamaha dirt bikes, achieving a better centralization of mass without sacrificing power output. A resonator chamber has been incorporated inside the exhaust to ensure quiet operation while enhancing the torque characteristics from the bottom to mid-range.

Similar to the 2010 Yamaha YZF 250, the Bilateral Frame was developed using new structural analysis methods. The frame itself consists of 16 components made from four different aluminum processes using revolutionary semi solid die-casting techniques. This approach allows complex shapes to be constructed stronger with just the right amount of controlled flex in critical areas. Thanks to the new technology the frame is more symmetrical allowing for a better overall chassis feel, while enhancing the frames ability to absorb/withstand forces and impacts with better balance and more consistency.

To accommodate the new frame design the rear suspension has been positioned in line with the machines central axis. The position of the rear shock itself has been moved approximately 30mm lower. Additional changes to the KYB shock absorber include an increased cylinder diameter from 46mm to 50mm for greater capacity. These shock revisions have created a new damping force curve which provides improvements to rider control and feel. In tune with the new frame and shock mount is a brand new swing-arm design that provides even greater cornering performance compared to the 2009 YZF450 Yamaha dirt bikes. The thickness of the rear axle clamp has been increased for greater rigidity while providing good longitudinal flexibility and high lateral/torsional rigidity.

In conjunction with the upgrades to the frame, the front fork triple clamp offset has been reduced from 25mm to 22mm. Caster, trail and other chassis dimensions have been optimized in relation to each other to help achieve a higher-level of handling performance. The new triple clamps also feature the same four-way adjustable handlebar mount design as found on the Yamaha 2010 YZF 250.

Additionally, an all new seat/under seat fuel tank has been introduced for 2010 which provides greater centralized machine mass and a lower center of gravity (COG).

2010 Yamaha YZF 250:

2010 YZ250F

2010 also provides a complete redesign of the highly successful YZF 250 Yamaha dirt bikes. This years YZ250F Yamaha Dirt Bikes feature an all new aluminum perimeter frame which is more rigid under a horizontal load & twisting, however provides the same stiffness under vertical loading conditions as the 2009 model. The head angle has been slightly increased to 27.5 degrees, and the trail increased to 120mm.

In the engine department Yamaha redesigned the air intake boot to improve overall throttle response. This year's Keihin carburetor features a built-in velocity stack and improvements to the accelerator pump cam shape for quicker fuel delivery. The intake cam lift has been increased to 7.7mm. Valve spring loads have been reduced, the spring retainers have been changed to aluminum, and a chromium nitride surface treatment has been added to the valve stems. Additionally the exhaust has been redesigned to both increase velocity and improve low-end power.
