Motorcycle Fuel Injection Troubleshooting - Reprogram 2010 Yamaha YZ450F.

In motocross, the big news the last couple years has been affordable motorcycle fuel injection making it's way into production machinery and onto the showroom floors. Unfortunately as with every new technology, questions always arise and fuel injection troubleshooting and tuning is a topic of many discussions at the moment among racers.

While Yamaha Dirt Bikes may have not been the first fuel injection motocross machinery to see production, Yamaha has taken much of the mystery out of fuel injection troubleshooting with the introduction of the 2010 Yamaha YZ450F GYTR Power Tuner. In the case of reprogramming the fuel maps and ignition on the 2010 CRF450 Honda and the 2010 KX450f Kawasaki you need a laptop computer, software, connector cables for power and data, and a 12volt battery or power supply. Additionally, a lot of work is often required taking apart the bike to expose the connectors, installing new wiring harnesses, and rerouting cables.

Not so with the use of the 2010 Yamaha YZ450F and GYTR Power Tuner. There is a plug on the left side of the Yamaha Dirt Bikes near the head tube which allows you to hook up the GYTR Power Tuner in about 15 seconds (no tools required). The GYTR Power Tuner only requires two AA batteries, so you don't need to haul around a 12 volt battery or power supply.

With this setup the entire process of changing maps can be completed in less than a minute.

When you turn on the GYTR Power Tuner, you will first select one of two modes: "SETTING" to work on the mapping, or "MONITOR" to check engine conditions.

In "MONITOR" mode you can view the current engine conditions: Engine RPM, Intake Air Temperature, Coolant Temperature, Atmospheric Pressure, and Throttle Position. The Monitor Mode also has a resettable Engine Run Time, and Self Diagnostic features. In the YZ450F Manual, there is a list of potential problems with the self-diagnostic (S/D Code) code, symptoms, and fuel injection troubleshooting recommendations listed for each.

In "SETTING" mode, you can create Ignition and Fuel Maps, read current maps installed on the machine, and download a map you have created. The GYTR Power Tuner is supplied with nine different maps all set to stock (+/- 0) when you purchase the tuner. Each map contains two three-by-three grids. The Fuel Injection (FI) grid is displayed on the left side, and the Ignition (IG) grid is displayed on the right. Each grid is layed out where the Y-Axis is Throttle Opening, and the X-Axis is Engine RPM.

The best method is to ride a "Zeroed-Out" stock map first, and then determine which part of the powerband you want to modify. Different maps can substantially change the feel of the power delivery. Small changes in where the power is situated within the powerband can also be applied. Different maps can make the bike feel a little quicker to rev from Low to Mid RPM, broaden the powerband for longer pull, or slow the revving for less response and easier to control power under tight or slippery conditions.

The GYTR Power Tuner is very easy to use, affordable fuel injection reprogramming tool (roughly $280), and fun to play with. While the GYTR Power Tuner can't make your Yamaha Dirt Bike faster, it can substantially change the feel of the power delivery to suit the rider's preferences and track conditions.
