Battery Powered ATV Guide.

Battery powered ATVs are miniature versions of youth and adult sized ATVs. Most often equipped with a steering wheel, handlebars, a brake and a gas pedal, child size ATVs are easy for children to maneuver, yet impose enough challenge off-road to keep the ride fun. All terrain vehicles are the four wheels of freedom. If your child seeks the thrill of travel yet yearns for the driving seat, a child size ATV may be the perfect gift.

Most battery operated ATVs are built for one rider, although there are a few models that can accommodate two riders with a weight limit of up to 150 lbs. Keep in mind, two riders increase the risk of accidents, as the primary driver has the handlebars, while the secondary rider has to hold onto them. It's best for small children to have their own models in which they can ride side by side rather than on the unit together.

Battery operated ATVs travel at a speed of 2.0-5.0 miles per hour, and some may even reach speeds of 7.0 mph. Most battery ride-on vehicles run off the charge of a 6 or 12 volt battery, but some may run off 24 volts. If you're shopping for your child's first ride-on vehicle, consider a 12 or 24 volt battery vehicle for extended years of driving. The higher the battery, the faster the vehicle, and as children grow, they'll seek more speed. It's best for busy riders to have a back up battery, as each battery only holds enough charge for a few solid hours of riding. Spare batteries can be purchased wherever four wheelers are sold, and having a spare fully charged on hand will make it possible for your child to ride longer without interruption.

Most ATVs are designed for children ages 3 and up. Depending on the weight capacity, children may be able to ride the same unit for five or more years. If a model accommodates a higher weight limit, one adult may be able to ride on the ATV with one child, although most models are built for one rider.

How safe are ATVs? Bear in mind, a battery powered ATV operates at a speed that is safe for most children.

Furthermore, if children are knocked off of the ride-on or accidentally fall, the ATV unit stops running. The risk of rollover is minimal, and the last two wheels are completely covered, so a pair of toddler legs can't physically get caught under the traction system. With proper riding gear such as a helmet, knee and elbow pads, an ATV is a safe, yet thrilling experience for all children.

Battery powered ATVs make a wonderful gift for children of all ages. With the wheel in their hands and an open road before them, children get to enjoy their first sense of freedom.
