Whether purchasing your machine in person or online through Dirt Bike Classifieds, below are some common issues and recommended areas to inquire regarding used motorcycles for sale and used ATVs for sale.

- Keep in mind bikes that are trail ridden typically have more hours on them than a bike which has been strictly raced. Don't be afraid of bikes which have been raced, as many have been very well maintained and have low hours on them.

- Inquire or Examine the condition of the Engine and Transmission Oil. The engine oil level should be in proper range and look relatively fresh, if not question maintenance of the bike. If the transmission oil is grey/bubbly most likely the water pump seal is blown. Look for any signs of leakage specially cracks in the Cases which can be very expensive to replace.

- Inquire or Examine the condition of the Spark Plug and Air Filter, as this is often a record of the engines condition. Examine the Coolant Level and condition of the Coolant. Request frequency of cleaning or replacement.

- When evaluating used motorcycles for sale, perform or request a Leak-Down test for a 4-Stroke engine. Any bike with reading of 15-20% or greater warrants an engine rebuild. For a 2-Stroke perform a Compression Test, any bike below 150-170 psi (at sea level) warrants an engine rebuild. Request maintenance records or run hours between rebuilds.

- Inquire or Examine the condition of the Clutch and observe any slipping when under load or dragging when engaged. This could mean new clutch plates/springs or more expensive components are required. Request when last time these parts were replaced.

- Inquire or Examine Crankshaft for rust/corrosion, and excessive movement up/down which could indicate worn main bearings. Request if these components have been recently evaluated or replaced.

- Inquire or Examine the Front/Rear Suspension for oil leaks or damage. Examine the Fork Tubes for any sharp scratches or damage. Compress Rear Suspension and allow to rebound. Notice any noises or sticking points along the travel indicating worn bearings/bushing/seals. Grasp the Linkage and examine any excessive play or damage indicating worn bearings or linkage requiring replacement. Request if these components have been recently evaluated or replaced.

- Inquire or Examine the Frame for cracks or any damage indicating a major spill. Examine the Radiators for signs of leakage or damage. Request if these components have been recently evaluated or replaced.

- Inquire or Examine the Wheels overall condition for damage, and any excessive side-to-side movement indicating worn bearings. Review Tires for damage or signs of excessive wear. Request if these components have been recently evaluated or replaced.

- Inquire or Examine the Brake Pads/Rotors for signs of damage or over-heating. If you can't see the wear indicator lines on the pads then they require replacing. Request if these components have been recently evaluated or replaced.

- Inquire or Examine the Chain/Sprockets for signs of excessive wear. Put bike on stand and rotate the rear wheel. If the chain slack varies greatly as tire is rotated then new chain/sprockets are required. Request if these components have been recently evaluated or replaced.
